CHURCH OF SAN PIETRO (ST. PETER)

CHURCH OF SAN PIETRO (ST. PETER)

Going back on your own steps and turning right along Via della Pace you will find the Church of S. Pietro: it is the oldest monument of the city (13th century), built with the materials of the old church castle of

Manzano. According to a very common way of building at that time, the inhabitants of Cherasco used materials of different origins, so on the facade were set gravestones and Roman funerary sculptures (coming from Pollenzo or from finds in Cherasco), high medieval sandstone (from the primitive church of Manzano), next to classically Romanesque or Gothic solutions (loggiato with blind arches, green majolica tiles).

The church has undergone successive alterations such as the breaking through of the side walls (the chapels were built in the '700), the opening of the doors and square windows on the sides. The interior is completely redone, however it preserves a precious fresco in the bell tower dated 1488 (but probably much older) representing a crucifixion, the four large canvases of the presbytery and choir (by Giovanni Taricco, grandson of the most famous Sebastiano, and Giuseppe Ellena, both artists from Cherasco).
