THE CHURCH OF ST.AUGUSTINE

THE CHURCH OF ST.AUGUSTINE

The Church of St. Augustine, built in 1672 by Boetto, like the Arch of Belvedere, shows frescoes by Taricco and Aliberti. The icon representing the «Massacre of the Innocents» was painted in 1661 by Bartolomeo Garavoglia of Livorno Vercellese, a pupil of Guercino. Worthy of note are the wooden statues of the "Christ at the column" by the sculptor Plura of Lugano, the "Risen Christ" by Clementi of Turin, the organ case decorated with some caryatids and the large entrance door artistically carved, dating back to the seventeenth century; finally, the main altar is a true masterpiece of Baroque art.

Next to the church we  can find the Palazzo Brizio della Veglia, a Gothic building built in 1400 with a facade with arches and terracotta ornaments. On the other side of the square one can spot the Palazzo Fracassi that houses the historical evidence of the presence of the Holy Shroud in Cherasco and the passage of Napoleon, in addition to the memorabilia to be found in Palazzo Salmatoris.
